Eyelid Surgery

The main focal point of visual contact is the eyes. When excess skin lays on the eyelashes or over the corner of the eye, they look tired and shady. Puffiness of the upper eyelid or bags and puffiness of the lower eyelids is often caused by hereditary fatty protrusions that can be easily removed to provide a more youthful and pleasing appearance.

Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift
If your eyelids are extremely puffy, surgery may be justified for functional, as well as cosmetic reasons. It may be recommended that you see an optometrist or ophthalmologist who can document the presence or absence of visual field loss from overhanging eyelids. If this is the case, insurance may cover a portion of your surgery.   Be sure to advise your plastic surgeon of any eye diseases or difficulties. Some conditions may preclude eyelid surgery and must be discussed. It is important that patients have undergone a complete eye examination within the previous twelve months. Please request your eye doctor to forward the report to your plastic surgeon's office.

Laser Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery

The upper and lower eyelids are frequently done together. The upper or lower eyelid may be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift. Often, the lower eyelid fat can be removed without a visible incision. A basic technique, "trans-conjunctival Blepharoplasty," provides the approach from inside the eyelid to remove the fat. The wrinkles are then removed with the laser or chemical peel or by excision of excessive skin. Using the laser to perform the surgery decreases the amount of swelling and bruising.

After Surgery
Typically, patients are able to return to their normal daily living with the aid of makeup and sunglasses. Minor swelling, bruising and blurred vision are temporary and are minimized by the use of the laser. Any external scars go through a period of swelling becoming red or pink before becoming virtually imperceptible. This occurs as the scar matures, which takes longer with thicker skin.
